Written by Professor Gordon S. Lynch

Folic acid can help defend us against some diseases. But to what extent can it fight off an existing illness?

Folate is a term that describes the natural form of folic acid in food. Low levels of folate in the diet have been implicated in a number of different disorders, ranging from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementia and depression, to cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancers. In many cases, studies have shown a close association between high blood levels of the amino acid ‘homocysteine' and the risk of these diseases.
