Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fatty deposits, known as plaque, on the inside of your arteries. Over time the plaque deposits increase in thickness and become hard. The walls of your arteries, which are normally stretchy like elastic, become hard and inflexible. As a consequence, the space inside of the artery becomes narrower, reducing the amount of blood that can flow through.
