The Squeeze: Do Compression Garments Work?

Written by Professor Gordon S. Lynch

While compression garments have long been used for medical purposes, they’re rapidly becoming a standard part of an athlete’s kit. They look fancy and cost a packet ... but do they really work?

Medical compression stockings have been used for the treatment of poor blood flow for more than half a century. The pressure they provide helps to prevent blood from pooling in the lower legs and to return more easily to the heart. This helps prevent blood clots (also known as ‘deep vein thromboses’ or ‘DVTs’) forming in the veins of the leg.
