Giving up smoking is often associated with weight gain - and this can discourage some people from quitting. Scientists are investigating how we can lose the cigarettes, without gaining weight.

Cigarette smoking is one of the most important preventable causes of premature death, mainly because it increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, lung cancer, respiratory disorders and other illnesses. Yet despite all of the negative health consequences caused by cigarette smoking, 20 to 35 per cent of people in affluent countries still smoke.
